Biography & Artist Statement

Heather graduated from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minor in Art in 1998.  While attending MSU, her work could be seen gracing the cover of the school’s schedule of classes.   One could also see her in Wichita Falls Times Record News on the cover of the Arts and Entertainment section.  The pursuit of her degree took her to several schools.  While attending San Jacinto Jr. College in Pasadena Texas, she was the feature of a solo exhibition.  The past few years, she has traveled all over Oklahoma and Texas showing and placing in Art Festivals and local competitions.  Heather is a member of Colored Pencil Society of America.  She recently was awarded honorable mention at the District 215 CPSA Art Show.

Heather spent many years raising, training, and competing in horse shows and rodeos.  Her inexhaustible love for horses is evident in every piece.  Training in biology and the study of animals has helped with understanding the body language and anatomy of the horses in her art.  Due to injury she can no longer pursue her passion of riding horses, but has more time to focus on them in her art.  Her work could be called “imaginative realism”, each piece being believable despite its fantastical nature.  With a focus on winged horses to convey the feeling of pure freedom, joy, and power felt when riding them.  Her art has many layers of meaning determined by emotions and topics that arise in everyday life.  She has worked with many types of medium but has found colored pencil to fill all of her needs.  Heather pushes the pencil to the point it does not appear to be pencil, and is amused when someone asks if it’s paint.
